Originally St. Joseph's Parish began as a mission of Sacred Heart Parish (now Annunciation of the Lord) in Taunton in 1887. St. Joseph's became an official parish in 1913 with Rev. E. Sousa de Mello as the rector. From 1911-1935, a brick building was used as the main church until the current church was built. Commissioning on the current building began in 1933. The church was designed by Maginnis and Walsh of Boston and constructed by Francis L. Collin's of Dighton for $33,800 at the time. The new church building was dedicated on May 12, 1935 by Bishop James E. Cassidy.
In its original dedication and construction, a few things stick out. First, the altar was dedicated to Fr. Simon A. O'Rourke, the third pastor of St. Joseph's who passed away unexpectedly. Another piece still stands in the original design and construction to this day. The chancel window above the altar contains symbols of the old and new churches represented by Noah's ark on the left and the bark of St. Peter on the right. The bark of St. Peter is a common symbol for the Catholic Church and the leadership of the Bishop of Rome passed on from Christ. Small symbols also surround that image with depictions of St. Joseph, the Virgin Mary, the Church, and the Old and New Covenants.
The original church building would serve as the parish center for St. Joseph's until August 28, 1981, when a large fire broke out. No one was present at the time of the fire, but the building burnt down and was declared a complete loss by fire fighters on scene. Shortly after, Rev. William O'Connell, pastor of St. Joseph's at the time, commissioned for a new parish center to be built in place of the old one. This parish center continues to serve the parish today.
There was one other church in Dighton in addition to St. Joseph's. St. Peter's Parish was located in South Dighton for over 100 years. In 1901, Fr. James Smith, rector of Sacred Heart Parish, established St. Peter's as a second mission of the parish. The Diocese later attached as a mission of St. Anthony's Parish in Taunton in 1903. St. Peter's became an official parish in 1925 and was given a formal rectory in 1928 right next to the church. Most notably, the parish was staffed by the Montfort Fathers from 1967-1997. Among the contributions to that parish community by the Montfort Fathers was a parish center and hall bought from a Congregational Church in 1993.
In 2008, Bishop George Coleman merged St. Joseph's with St. Peter's parish in South Dighton, creating the parish, St. Nicholas of Myra. Fr. Timothy Goldrick was assigned as the founding pastor of the new community and would make significant contributions to upgrade the parish and build up the church. Fr. Goldrick served the community of North Dighton until 2012 when he was succeeded by Fr. Paul Fedick, who ministered to the parish until 2021. In 2021, Bishop Edgar DaCunha assigned Fr. David Deston, Jr., and Fr. Daniel Nunes to St. Nicholas of Myra and placed the parish in a collaborative with Annunciation of the Lord in Taunton, MA. In January 2023, Fr. Nunes was transferred to another parish in Harwich, MA and Fr. Deston became the sole administrator of Annunciation of the Lord and St. Nicholas of Myra.
